Back in the fall of 2005, i made the decision on which aeg to get. i decided i would save up my funds and purchas a Top M60 DX, a decision i both hate and love myself for making. throughout the time ive owned the M60, as many of you know, there have been a shitload of problems with it, brian may remember the first time he laid eyes on it, the damn thing crapped out. why have i stuck with it for so long? i honeslty dont know why, but i guess it might have somthing to do with the simple fact: it looks fucking badass. i recently began the resurection process of turning the M60 from a lumbering burden, to an effective killing machine. this thread will chonicle my attempt to transform the Top M60 into a weapon worthy of being called a SAW.
i purchased the top m60 for 800 dollars from redwolf airsoft (including shipping), stock it shoots about 280fps, nothing too special. however my M60 was apparently stored at redwolf and shipped with a compressed spring thereby reducing its fps to somthing similar to a cheap CYMA LPEAG, and its range to somthing more like an AEP than a light machinegun. after a few games with this beast, i realised somthing had to change. there is no way im going to lug this 12 pound gun around if its being outranged by stock UTG mp5s. so after doing some research about the TOP M60's, thier inner workings, opinions, and what upgrade parts were available for them. i decided to buy a 1 Joule spring, and try it out and see how the 60 worked with this spring. As my luck would have it, this spring never showed up, after 5 freakin months of waiting. so i decided by christmas 06' i was just going to use my christmas money to buy a complete set of upgrade parts. they dont sell an upgrade kit for the M60 series, so unfortunatly you have to go out and buy every neccessary part indevidually, a huge pain in the ass. so after a while, redwolf got all of the stuff back in stock and i made my order. the stock M60's from top use a "bellows" type system, this is more akin to an accordion than an AEG cylinder and spring. so to turn the M60 into a more reliable weapon, you need to replace the bellows with a conventional, cylinder and piston setup. this set came to about 100 dollars. next was the spring, somthing id wanted to replace all along. i wanted to get about 350 FPS out of this gun to allow me to engage targets a little further away than the average AEG could. so i ordered a PDI 140% spring nothing too strong, but not too weak either. having this stronger spring in the gun, i also needed a stonger spring guide that would not snap under the pressure from the more powerful spring. so i also ordered the guarder M60 spring guide. with all of this enhanced power, the gears would need a boost in strength as well. so along with all this stuff i bought a full steel ANGS gearset. with all of these parts and the assorted greases needed to keep the m60 running smoothly, the bill came to about 240 dollars. so i recieved all of this stuff in the mail and began bulding the monster.....
as i began moving through the process of stripping the 60 down, i realised what an idiotic and rediculous design TOP had used. The M60 does not use your typical type 2 or 3 gearbox. instead it uses a TOP original gearbox, with the bellows system mounted to the upper reciever. why they did this, i will never know, im not even sure they know. however there is a plus side to all of this, if your cylinder, piston or spring guide break, or your spring loses power from being compressed. you can replace them without taking your mechbox out, which is needless to say very good. because of the m60's use as a SAW the parts that usually break are easily replaceable. this the one part of the m60s design that does work.
to upgrade the bellows system you take the upper reciever off and take out all of the bellows related junk, spring and spring guide. you then take the conventional cylinder and piston and bolt them dirctly to the reciever. the gear replacement procedure is a little more complicated. the gear replacement set comes with four parts. 3 main gears and a long rod that leads from the motor (located in the stock) to the gearbox (located in the center of the gun above the trigger) as i began replacing the gears, it all seemed like it was coming together. everything was going my way. i had the gearbox out, i replaced everything closed it up again. but when it came to the motor i found a problem. the rod leading from the motor to the gearbox (which along the way to the gearbox turns the loading mech as well) was connected using an allen wrench size of which i did not have. this is where im stuck right now, with the M60s guts spilled all over the floor because i did not have one allen wrench, i leave you with these pictures. until next time.
see how many parts you can regognize...
gearbox ( silver thing in the center) motor (left) Lower reciever (big black piece of metal in the center above the gearbox) thiers also some of the original gears on the floor on the righthand side
some of the more regognizeable parts, stock, magwell, mag cover, feed tray, trigger....
finished upper reciever, with the spring, spring guide and conventional piston and cylinder all installed
and that is the situation thus far (Feb 26th 2007) basically its utter chaos. tune in to find out what happens next!
