I have a long project ahead of me. I took apart the gearbox on my A&K M4 CQB and was a bit disappointed. Everything looked pretty crappy compared to gearboxes I've seen online. It works now, but I fear it will die soon. The casting of the gearbox alone looks very cheap. The gears had barely any lube and the bushings were nylon. The hopup unit I don't even want to talk about. I say I am only a bit disappointed only because this was my first real AEG which I spent around $90 on shipped (no wonder why ). And I was planning on using this gun as my learning tool as far as maintaining, cleaning, upgrading, and all around tooling. I don’t mind spending a little more over time if the end results are:
1. I learn the whole inner workings of an AEG 2. I achieve performance equal to higher end guns.
You’ll have to forgive the countless posts with questions on "how to". I am gonna have a buttload. Any advice would be helpful. For starters, I was thinking about getting a G&G gearbox with 7mm bearings and a new hopup unit.

to be honest 7mm gearboxs are not needed..and i would stay FAR away from bearings.. I had a High speed box and the bearings exploded in them..It was shimmed correctly too. Depending on what your doing.. I would just get your hands on a TM, ICS gear box and use that as your base. My ICS gearbox has taken abuse like nothing else and is still perfect. Use just plain old 6mm bushings Systema area 1000 perferred. Shim it correctly i will post a link tonight of how to. Thats to start. then Where ever you want to go from there we can discuss options. If you want high speed a TQ monster or just a good all around box. You might want to rewire your weapons too with better wireing and resoder it to make sure its tight and not resisting anywhere.. you can burn stuff up fast that way. imo PDI make the best springs that last longest and wear slower. for now thats all I have so until you figure out what kind of weapon you want. BTW TM hop-up is superior to all. I would try to do a direct replacement if you can with a TM hop up chamber and with the rubber I have had luck with promethius(sp?). You don't need all the little toys people claim but at the same time you can't cheap out on parts..I got plenty of experience with that.

OK here's an update . It's completely disassembled. Ordered a new hopup and metal body. I'm holding off on upgrading the gearbox. Might as well see how it performs after some relubrication and shimming. I also had to order a new RIS foregrip because 2 plastic prongs on the upper half that was held in place by the delta ring snapped as soon as I pulled on the delta ring. I took a chance on buying the UTG RIS (came with cool looking rubber rail protectors) hoping it would fit and IT DID ;D. After Sunday's game, I'll decide if a new gearbox is needed. I'll post pics with the mostly cosmetic upgrades when I'm done.
